Time is right to change Manchester United's system - Amorim insists.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was among multiple first-team players absent from the holiday period victory against Newcastle United.

Head coach Ruben Amorim contends that switching Man Utd's tactical system due to media noise would have been "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim moved away from his usual back three setup with wing-backs and instead field an standard four-man defense shielded by two holding midfielders.

He himself conceded this effectively functioned as a six-man defensive block in the latter minutes as his squad dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second clean sheet of the campaign.

Despite he once famously said that even the highest authority could compel him to tweak his system, Amorim insists the option to utilize different formations has remained part of his strategy.

However, he emphasizes he could solely make the switch when his team were faring well enough - lest it would look as if he was giving in to outside pressure.

"At the time I arrived here last season, I understood perhaps I lacked the players to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the commencement of a journey," he said.

"Our aim was to build an identity. Today is a separate time. We lack a lot of players, and we need be flexible, so they comprehend the reason we are making changes.

"The change isn't because of the demands of the media, or the faithful.

"When media talk about changing the formation all the time, I can't change because the squad will understand I'm changing because of you and I think that is a disaster for the coach.

"When we are playing well in our preferred setup, that becomes the opportunity to adapt.

"We will develop into a more complete side because when our full complement of players are back, we are not intending to employ a back three in every match."

Squad Challenges Loom Large

Having only two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to state his side have been playing well.

He is, though, working with a injury-ravaged roster, with multiple first-team stars already ruled out for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will rise if midfielder Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will be absent for the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be pressing his boss to let him to return after his muscle injury.

"Bruno is already insisting he has to train," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

The Captain's Role Remains

However, the Portuguese star will probably still be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his leader to continue offering input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and speaking. He's always communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"He has bad things at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to observe the rest of the squad training. There are a many aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

While the exact date for the captain's return - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
