The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Lack of Obesity Jabs

Less than one in 10 people eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, caution the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural guidance on the drugs.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

According to estimates, more than two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and continuous support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to universal availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing considerable body mass, says the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even under the current best projected scenario, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The guideline urges governments and firms to increase access, through measures such as patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the core ingredient of a leading brand – is set to lapse in multiple nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Work

These medications replicate a natural hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and enhance satiety so users consume fewer calories.

Patients typically see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the medication, because their typical food cravings resume.

Being carrying excess weight raises your risk for developing health problems, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific cancers.

Excess weight impacts people in countries worldwide and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
