Per figures provided by Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinian individuals have died while detained since October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has indicated that the real figure is almost certainly considerably higher, due to hundreds of disappeared people from Gaza.

Study Results

Even with the overall count of fatalities recorded being much greater than previous assessments, it probably does not reflect the entire scope of Palestinian casualties, as stated by the leader of the detainee affairs unit.

“While we are offering documentation for a greater figure of deaths than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he stated. “We are certain that there are even now detainees who perished in custody that we are unaware of.”

Only a single instance of beating detainees has come to trial, with the service member sentenced to seven months. “In spite of this large quantity of deaths, during 24 months not one individual has been arrested,” the representative said. “There have been no charges over any killing.

“As long as these policies remain in effect, every Palestinian in confinement faces risk, even the those in good health, also the young ones who have no underlying conditions.”

Notable Incidents

Several casualties in detention have been high profile, such as a 50-year-old medical chief who lost his life in confinement after a third of a year in confinement.

A detainee held with the deceased stated that he was led to the exercise area by correctional officers immediately preceding his demise, clearly wounded and naked from the hips downward. His body has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Additional detainees who lost their lives in Israeli custody remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and military provided investigators with the figure of deaths in detention, and minimal further data including the facility where they lost their lives, but not the prisoners’ names.

Identification Challenges

In 21 cases, mostly individuals from Gaza, analysts could not to correlate the limited information provided by officials to a casualty registered by advocacy bodies, by means of accounts from freed prisoners or reporting in the media.

The detainees’ families may not know about their loved ones’ deaths as well, as Israel has made it difficult to locate Palestinians it is detaining.
