Similar to Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the night before, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil win for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their standing at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This result marked consecutive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle domestic and European football with a thin squad has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the week that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they looked weary throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had tried to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the in-form Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

City, in comparison, have no such workload worries. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose energetic offense manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a excellent first half showing that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

Early Chances

After the Break

The primary adjustment came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to produce a single shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Having failed to defeat any side who finished above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a favorable standing after nine games.
