France will start intercepting small boats in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
