"When are you speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated fans have publicly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals often show them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"So anyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The trio have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience demanded a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will always be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
