Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Warriors Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the premier party of characters who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing initiated the story’s plot—used the foes for his selfish purposes, invading the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, wants vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their position as important members in House Halovar could assist the team access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now accompany him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

According to the latest episode’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Questers and Planners groups.

Viewers can look forward to learning which characters will be in which group in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
