Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
The enterprise behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
